The Swiss Open Systems User Group (/ch/open) and many other institutes and companies are organising the OpenExpo in Bern, Switzerland on March 12 and 13. The programme lists fifty presentations, 19 of which are related to the use of Open Source by public administrations.
François Marthaler, who works for the government of the Swiss canton Waadt, for example will argue how Open Source ensures independence of public administrations. He will also show how Open Source benefits maintenance and development of applications for public administrations.
A second speaker is Florian Schiessl, who works at the IT department of the German city Munich. He will evaluate the German city's public administration first year of working with an Open Source desktop. "Challenges are the integration of the GNU/Linux clients with the IT infrastructure, the making available of specialised applications and the switch to OpenOffice."
A third presentation is by Rüdiger Czieschla, representing the public administration of the German city Freiburg. He will discuss the benefits of the city's migration to OpenOffice. "It has been worth it for many reasons, not only because it saved half a million euro."
Access to the conference is free of charge.
