By having common procedures and exploiting available standards, accessing resources across organisational boundaries will at the same time be easier for users and more secure. Significant savings in administration and development costs are likely. Responsibility for administering users can be devolved to trusted partners, minimising the overhead of administering information on external users. The action will draw on previous and current activities in the IDA and IDABC domains: it will aim to support the authentication policy, authentication over the public key infrastructure and requirements identified in the "Architectural Study for secure hosting of IDA's PCIs".
