The IDABC conference in February of this year highlighted the central importance of an effective system of electronic identities (eID) for the development of cross- border eGovernment services. This third issue of SYNERGY is therefore dedicated to the topic of eIDs. It is attempted to give a broader overview of the current state of eID in Europe through a series of articles which include: descriptions of ongoing projects and programmes, case studies of some national eID schemes, an interview with Prof. Bart Praneel of the Katholieke Universiteit Leuven, and finally, information on the eID activities - a part of the IDABC work programme. |
