  • Is eLink a programme or software?

eLink is primarily a specification for G2G communication. By publishing the eLink specification, IDA provides the means to anyone interested to build software that complies with this specification. Additionally, IDA provides to its stakeholders one eLink software implementation in the form of the eLink toolkit accompanied with eLink aware applications (eLink pilots).

  • Why would I need the eLink software?

The software provided by IDA can be used by member state administrations to gain hands-on experience and evaluate how eLink can be used to assist them in their G2G communications needs. It can also be used to act as a starting point or building block for the development of IDA eLink compliant communications infrastructure.

  • Is eLink software easy to install?

Yes. The software is accompanied with detailed step-by-step instructions for its installation.

  • How much I have to do myself?

The eLink toolkit provides a JAVA API to facilitate the communication with any existing or new G2G application. Assuming that the legal and business environment exists, the effort required for the adaptation of existing applications to use eLink is minimal. In addition, the IDA eLink library that provides the Java API includes two test applications; one acting as client and the other as server applications.

  • Is the pilot software ready to be used?

The pilots included in the software distribution have been tested in controlled conditions. In addition, their operation may require the utilisation of additional software (e.g., the German OSCI system). They are included with the toolkit in order to provide examples of usage.

  • IDA provides a JAVA implementation. Am I restricted to JAVA only?

The eLink specification does not prescribe the use of JAVA. Any development platform may be used, as long as the communication interface is kept compliant to the eLink specification.

  • I am with a private company and I would like to offer eLink compliant software using the eLink toolkit. Can I get a license?

Currently, the eLink toolkit and pilot software developed within the project is available only to Member State public administrations using a licensing scheme.

  • Which platforms does the eLink software support?

The software distribution is platform independent since it has been developed in JAVA. Of course, depending on the target platform the required software should be downloaded. Platform dependent software is the MySQL and JAVA installations. The only restriction is the IDA eLink toolkit installation scripts, which currently aim at a Unix platform (tested for Linux, Solaris).

  • Is there an IDA eLink manual?

Yes. The software distribution includes manuals for all parts that comprise the IDA eLink network; namely, the IDA eLink library, the node, the services directory, and the certificates directory. You can also check the documentation section of the site. It should be noted that you should have firstly become acquainted with the IDA eLink specification before delving into the relevant manuals.
